The Truth About Makeup Removers | Guest Blog Post

GUEST BLOG POST BY KAILEY TEE

Have you made the discovery?

Are you conscious of how much waste you produce when taking your makeup off? Neither was I, until recently. I’m super excited about the fact that I have discovered reusable makeup remover pads by local New Zealand company: The Good Source (stocked by Ethically So).

We often neglect the small changes we could make in our daily lives to help our planet. Let me assure you, making a sustainable change by switching from your regular disposable cotton pads to the reusable Microfiber Makeup Remover definitly helps contribute to a better outcome for the planet.

The Reality

It takes approximately 5-6 months to break down cotton pads, and that’s quite a long time if you ask me! Since making the switch, I have found it so much easier to remove my foundation after a long day. I love the fact that the makeup remover pads only need water for them to work effectivly, and as a bonus they are super easy to wash! The pad comes clean with only a little soap and water, or if you are feeling lazy just chuck it in the wash. Simple as that! You feel so good afterwards, rather than feeling guilty about adding more waste to our beautiful planet earth. The amazing benefit of using these reusable removers is they last for up to 200 uses, which is the equivelent of 4 packs of round cotton make up pads or 8 packs of single use plastic wipes!

Mind Blowing

Isn’t it crazy to think that it takes 100 years for the makeup wipes we use daily to break down?! I’m here to make a pledge this new decade and advocate for reducing waste by using sustainable items. Personally, I have been using this awesome alternative for a few months now and it actually saves me from emptying the bin less which is a timesaver too, win-win situation right there! At first I was definitely a little skeptical on how these would work, however I have found them to be an absolute dream, and so much better than disposables.

They also come in 3 different colours: Black, White and Blush. The black and blush short microfibre ones I use are ideal for taking off dark makeup, the other white long microfibre one is great for everyday use. By choosing a reusable makeup remover pad, you can eliminate the waste from a whole bag of single use cotton pads knowing that you are contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable planet earth.

Do you want to reduce your impact on the environment?

Here’s 5 ways on how you can:

  • Avoid going into drugstore cosmetics stores to purchase makeup and shop at companies or small and local NZ businesses with ethical/eco packaging such as:

-              Be + Humble NZ

-              SustainaBLAH

-              The Good Source

-              Raw Nature

-              ZAO Makeup

(all stocked on Ethically So.)

  • Choose supplement companies who sell plant based protein/collagen products and use recyclable packaging:

Jeuneora - An amazing recycling programme run by TerraCycle when you return their containers and they are melted down to be reused.

Go Good - Protein Powder comes in 100% plastic free packaging and is made with natural ingredients, right here in New Zealand!

Shop it here, p.s the chocolate pea is AMAZING!

Mosswellbeing - Beautiful glass jars that are also recyclable

  • Unfollow any social media accounts that give you the urge to purchase any unnecessary new products just to keep up with the latest makeup trends, by doing this, you won’t be tempted and you just might find yourself saving in the long run.

  • Reconsider what you buy. If you are looking for let’s say a mascara for your friend, ask yourself: how sustainable is their packaging? Is the product natural but packed in plastic? (E.g bamboo cotton buds). Do look out for plastic free packaging - it’s the way to go!

My sustainable journey so far has helped me be more mindful about how we live our daily lives and actually realise that we can make small changes, even if it just one thing at a time perhaps we won’t see as much rubbish ending up in landfills and our coastlines. Let’s work together and help one another to keep New Zealand clean, green and beautiful people!
