Reusable Razors, Used by Him | A Mans Review
Guest Blog Post by @amermanstale
Alright, guys let’s just have a quick chat about the situation regarding your plastic razors and the environment.
I used to be just like you using these little barbie like razors, that was good for just about the one shave. Do you ever just feel like your face is left irritated with cuts? I know I did, and it sucked.
I’m super stoked to finally have the answer for you right here. This isn’t a lie either and doesn’t come with some cheesy slogan like ‘Gillette the best ya gran can get” and all that rubbish. Anyway, I’ll let you make up your mind. Keep reading, it’ll be worth it!
Behind the Scenes
After travelling South East Asia for 6 months, I was pretty sick of the amount of plastic I saw, not just on the land but also in the sea. There seemed to be a crazy amount of plastic floating around the line up in the surf. Your hands and arms would get covered in plastic bags and wrappers as you paddled, it sucked!
I think the most common bits of plastic that I found washed up on the shore were those little plastic fish soy sauce bottles you get from sushi and plastic single-use razor heads. It made me feel sick, as I knew that back at my hostel I had the same shitty razors in my wash bag, and not just one, but a whole pack. It was at this point I decided I needed to find a better solution.
The Switch
After jumping on the internet it wasn’t long until I found a few new alternatives, but to be honest they all kind of looked terrifying to me. After looking through a few of these alternatives I settled on this scary looking old school cutthroat, and couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. I told my partner about this and she went out and bought me one (she’s a legend). I was stoked to get to try this new shave and ditch the plastic past.
Like a little kid at Christmas, I unwrapped the new blade and cracked on with my first shave. After 2 or 3 minutes tackling this thing just to get the blade in, I was left with a cut finger and feeling pretty stressed out. I hadn’t even started on the shaving part! It was like a puzzle trying to figure out what position to get my hands into to use the thing. Anyway, I used this cut-throat for a few months and started to get the hang of it. However I still just wanted something I could pick up for a quick and easy 5-minute shave, and then get on with the rest of my day.

That’s when I found Ethically So. On their site, they had these really old school looking razors. They reminded me of something from a war film, they looked badass. I got myself one of these to test out. To be honest I still felt a little sceptical once it was delivered.
After the first stroke with this old war relic, I was won over. It was so smooth on the skin and gave a great close shave. I was honestly blown away at how well just the single blade worked. You see these adds on TV with razor companies boasting about having 16 blades on one razor, which I was always a complete sucker for, thinking “yeah surely the more the merrier” but I was completely wrong.
It’s amazingly satisfying thinking about walking down the beach one day and not seeing this thing laying in the sand. This razor will last a lifetime, and I plan to take care of it. It’s a one of purchase, as it’s heavy-duty and built to last. It’s funny to think that these razors were used for generations, and now we seem to be going back to the old ways to help reduce our plastic waste. So if like me you need a new badass razor that leaves your face feeling fresh and young then look no further. You can all thank me later.
The Specs
The razor itself is made of stainless steel and has a great weight to it. It uses just one singular blade, and you can replace these by just twisting the bottom of the razor and dropping a new blade in. The blades are super cheap and can be bought either directly from Ethically So. here, or any other barbershop near your house… Winning right!
With the stainless steel safety razor, I genuinely have little-to-no waste, no plastic just a singular steel blade to dispose of after about 4-5 shaves. Which can be done through the CaliWoods Blade Return Program.
